Glenfarclas 12 YO
Glenfarclas
Description
Available in 700 ml and 1 litre. Glenfarclas 12 is a straightforward introduction to what this distillery stands for: warm, sherry-rich whiskies. Known worldwide for these hallmarks, it is the quintessential Speyside malt. Glenfarclas is one of the few remaining family-owned distilleries and one we visited on our Speyside trip. A distinguishing feature is that they heat their stills directly with gas flames, which they say gives them "a more toasted and even slightly caramelised spirit." Fully matured in former Spanish sherry oak casks, bottled at 43% ABV with no added colouring and non-chill-filtered. Tasting Notes Appearance Glenfarclas maintains a very traditional bottle design. The 12-year-old box is electric blue and the bottle is sealed with a cork. In the glass, a deep toasted gold, almost caramel colour. Nose A light, silky perfume. A blend of sherry and honey notes, with oak and a touch of pine resin. Palate Medium-to-full bodied, with prominent sherry and fruity notes (raisins and apples) taking centre stage. Behind those come banana, honey, and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The wood is quite present too, along with a hint of cask moisture reminiscent of wet earth. Finish Spicy and fairly long. The fruity notes from the palate recede, leaving a somewhat dry finish. A true Speyside classic.
