#2 History
Japan's first whisky distillery, founded in 1923 by Shinjirō Torii at the foot of Mount Tennōzan, southwest of Kyoto (Osaka). It was here that the Suntory founder began producing Japan's first single malt whisky, seeking a spirit suited to the Japanese palate and its soft waters. Today Yamazaki is Suntory's flagship malt, renowned for components aged in American oak, Spanish sherry oak and the rare Japanese mizunara oak.
